[Journalism Internship] 25th Daejeon Science Festival hopes to attract more foreign participants

Daejeon Science Festival (DSF) is one of Korea’s biggest science festivals, which involves different fields such as future science and global science issues. The keywords of this year’s festival are citizens, daily life and festival. According to the organizers, they believe the “citizens are the most important people in this festival and try to want them to enjoy and learn science the fun way by connecting the subject to their everyday lives.” The DSF was established in 2000 and has since expanded in size and quality, so much so that the Daejeon Metropolitan City government decided to nominate it as the Best Festival of Daejeon in 2022 as well as the 2022 Areal Specialization International Event.
Since it is an international festival, foreigners are welcome to take part in the festival programs, such as the DSF science lab and the global university discussion program.

The event will be held in the Daejeon Convention Center, Expo Science Park, Daedeok Special Zone and the city center.
“The Daejeon Science Festival allows participants to experience what true science is. The majority of people recognize that science is the product or activity of specific groups. Science is, however, closely connected with society and culture. Therefore, participants will find science is for everyone through the DSF,” said Hye-Joo Kwon, a biology professor at the University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC), part of the Incheon Global Campus.

The event's main objective is to assist the development and promotion of the global science festival with participation from the entire nation based on the science city's infrastructure. In order to link with Daejeon’s goal of becoming a science city and building its reputation, the city government said it hopes more foreigners will participate in the festival.

Sindy Song, a UAC student who participated in the DSF IN 2021, said, “I was able to have time to learn deeply regarding the marine problems that I had simply out of curiosity. Not only that but also the time I spent with my team members during the project was very memorable for me.”
She said she would like to “recommend this program to other peer students who are pondering about participating in the upcoming 2022 Daejeon Science Festival. That’s because it would be an excellent opportunity to think about a bridge between their field of interests and science, which is so-called interdisciplinary work.”
